Pat was the newest crüe member here in the metal wrought catacombs of Brodie for a very short period of time, then Alex and Andrew were brought home from the new employee store and things changed. An industry veteran, he's been working on - not synonymous with fixing - bikes since '86. United Bicycle Institute in Ashland Oregon was where he acquired the arcane knowledge loose in his head today followed by a 5 year stint at Rocky Mountain as the Quality Control/Warehouse/ Production Line guy. Add a 6 year bit as a shop owner and he never has to say, "I'm sorry, but it might be interesting to hear what's wrong with you". Single malt scotch is one of his life's little pleasures - Bowmore, Lagavulin and Laphroaig will all be fine- add urban rides, cooking, reading, the flashy new PS2 and the fact his sweetie never calls him at work. He's come to love riding the Pemberton steeps, anywhere in Squamish and Harper's Mountain in Kamloops; each has been blessed with the blood (and chunks) of the Irish. Sleek fleshed, cell phone worshipping whiners top his list of things to send to Fargo, ND. Politicians - known as food animals in some circles - are next, crowded closely by those who confuse opinion with fact.
1. How long have you been working for Brodie?
4 years with a 1 year hiatus exploring the wilderness.
2. What are your daily duties?
Trying to keep the warehouse clean and organized (and Hercules thought HIS tasks were tough). Making coffee, building bikes, writing stuff for the web page and brochures.
3. Favourite Brodie moment?
An alcohol fueled midnight assault on our hotel room by our fave product manager and a semi clad young lass- nameless, as it should be- during one of the bike shows.
4. Do you remember your first bike?
There is grainy, 8mm footage of a 2 year old fat kid pedaling forward and back on a l'il red trike; Christmas, apparently, some time before dirt was invented. My first real bike was a CCM Mustang, 3-spd shifter, huge rear slick, red with a metallic red banana seat and chrome ape hangers.
5. Is there one bike in the current lineup that you have a special fondness for?
They are all favourites, kinda like your kids. The Ocho is the shape of things to come for the near future. The Ronin because it looks beautiful. The Drifter/Cohort twins... mmmm, twins.
6. Were you born in Vancouver? If not, where did the glorious moment take place?
Born and raised.
7. Did you have a hero to look up to when you were growing up? If so, who was it?
Chuck Yeager. Spiderman.
8. How would you describe your wardrobe?
I look like a survivor of a Value Village terrorist bombing.
9. Where were you Tuesday, July 30, 1996? hint: Olympic year.
Working at Rocky Mountain.
10. Do you have a favourite kind of music you listen to?
Mood determines. Currently the shuffle has Manic Street Preachers, Skinny Puppy, Filter, The Editors, Elvis, Pete Yorn, Levon Helm, The Raveonettes... (it was at this point his attention span failed and he wandered off, wondering if it was time for dinner.
11. If you could eat something every day, what would it be? (fave meal/style)
Pizza, Indian, Mexican. Food is good.
12. Cook at home or dine out?
Both, though the last meal cooked was an unmitigated disaster. Thankfully we maintain a healthy order-in menu file.
13. Do you Tweet?
Certainly, but I always say "excuse me" afterwards.
14. Coffee or tea?
Coffee. Americano, raw and I don't add water.
15. Starbuck's or indie?
Tarbux? heheheh... I'd drink boiled toe jam first.
16. Mac or PC?
If I had mah druthers- neither. But Macs are what we have at the office and I like how they work.
17. Cell, iPhone or Blackberry?
Two cans and a string.
18. Road ride or trail ride?
The grey trail now, urban assaults mean a cold beer and wine store on every block.
19. Derailleur, single speed or fixed gear?
Gears, but the single speed slowly finds it's way to completion.
20. Slipons, laces or Velcro?
Time of year dictates but I have 'em all.
21. Black lace or red?
Black if I get to pick, but any invite that involves lace and what's hiding beneath gets my full attention.
