Chromoly steel frames can be much stronger than aluminum. This is particularly important for street bikes, which are abused and crashed regularly. Also, the properties of steel give it a nicer, more supple ride than aluminum or carbon.

Description
Here's another idea from the past that has fresh relevance today. Like the original cromoly mtb, it sports a rigid fork, road gearing and tires and is at home on the street; a tire change puts trail riding on the agenda. Current gen hydraulic disc brakes make it a hard stopper in any weather, the gearing lets you sneer at elevation changes and standard mix of attachment points means fenders and bottles are easy add ons.
